Google officially started rolling out Android 7.0 Nougat to Nexus devices back in August this year. And now, Nougat has finally shown up in the list of Android OS versions currently running on active devices.
According to the latest Android distribution numbers as of November 7, Android 7.0 Nougat runs on 0.3% of all active Android smartphones in the world. This makes it the second least used Android distribution after Froyo (version 2.2) which is still on 0.1% of active devices.
The low distribution numbers of Android 7.0 Nougat are understandable, given that the new OS has only been rolled out on select Nexus and Android devices so far. Google has just started seeding the OS to LG's flagship G5 smartphone. Other devices are yet to receive the update.
Although Android 7.1, which comes pre-installed on Google's new Pixel and Pixel XL, has been already rolled out to Nexus devices, it's yet to make its way to the distribution charts.
According to Google, Android 6.0 Marshmallow is slowly expanding to more handsets and is now on 24% of active Android smartphones. Although a significant increase, the share of Marshmallow is still below Lollipop and KitKat.
As per the latest distribution numbers, Android Lollipop (versions 5.0 and 5.1) runs on 34.1% of Android devices, followed by 25% share of Android 4.4 KitKat. Both have witnessed a decline since September.
Jelly Bean on the other hand, powers 13.7% devices. Older releases such as Ice Cream Sandwich, Gingerbread and Froyo are on 1.3%, 1.3% and 0.1% devices respectively.
Last month, Google officially revealed the latest Android 7.1 Nougat features and a list of devices eligible for the update.
The Nexus devices that will receive Android 7.1 Nougat include Motorola Nexus 6, HTC Nexus 9, Huawei Nexus 6P, LG Nexus 5X, Pixel C and Asus Nexus Player. Android One-based devices will also be getting the new OS. The first devices to get the update will be Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X and Pixel C, all of which were launched last year. It has also been mentioned that the final version Android 7.1 Nougat will arrive by December.
