Despite all the talk of it being down and out, BlackBerry continues in hardware. The Canadian smartphone company on Monday brought into India its new Android powered smartphones, the DTEK 50 and DTEK 60. While BlackBerry DTEK 50 will retail at 21,990; the DTEK 60 is priced at Rs 46,990. The company also announced a new distribution partnership with Optiemus.
Blackberry is a software company in every way now with end-to-end cross platform mobility solution with secure connections. “The company now has four pillars: enterprise solutions, technology solutions, secure messaging and secure handsets,” explained BlackBerry India head Narendra Nayak. Clearly in the new world handsets is the last of BlackBerry’s priorities.
Alex Thurber, senior VP for global device sales, said the company takes its tag line of securely connecting the world very seriously. Now, this function spears across all operating systems and platforms and is not limited to BB OS like before. “What you have on your phone is your life,” Thurber said to underline the importance of privacy these days.
The DTEK phones come with inbuilt cryptographic features along with a secure boot-loader and the DTEK app that secures the apps downloaded on it. “At the end of the day your are interacting with the software and that is our expertise.”
DTEK 50 will standout for its 3GB RAM and 13MP rear camera and 5.2-inch full HD display. It is a value phone aimed at the mid tier, said Thurber, accepting that the Priv was too expensive for most users.
The company also announced a new distribution partnership with Optiemus, one of the larger players in the Indian mobile ecosystem. The company has a joint venture with Vistron for manufacturing and is also distributor for Samsung and Plantronics.
BlackBerry DTEK 50 is an affordable smartphone, and was first announced in July 2016. The DTEK50 runs Android Marshmallow and comes packed with pre-installed apps by the company such as the BlackBerry Hub, DTEK, Password Keeper, BBM and BlackBerry Calendar.
BlackBerry DTEK 50 is company’s ‘thinnest phone ever’ at 7.4 mm. The smartphone weighs 135 grams. The DTEK50 gets a 5.2-inch scratch resistant Full HD display. The device is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 processor with Adreno 405 GPU. The phone has 3 GB RAM and 16 GB ROM (expandable up to 2TB).
BlackBerry DTEK 50 sports a 13MP auto-focus rear camera with PDAF and Fast focus lock as well as 8MP front camera with flash. BlackBerry is offering its intelligent keyboard as a default on this phone. The phone is backed by a 2,610 mAh non-removable battery with Quick Charge 2.0 technology.
lackBerry DTEK 60 sports a 5.5-inch Quad-HD display and is powered by Snapdragon 820 processor. The smartphone comes with 4GB RAM and 32GB internal memory (expandable up to 256GB). It gets a 21MP rear PDAF camera with f/2.0 aperture, which is also the highlight of the device. The front camera is 8MP. There’s a 3,000mAh battery under the hood with Quick Charge 2.0 technology. It runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS.
Both BlackBerry DTEK 50 and DTEK 60 will come with DTEK Security App in-built. The app makes the smartphones more secure by constantly monitoring the use of other applications installed in the device. The app sends users notifications whenever their privacy is at risk.
